Guide on How to Measure a child for a First Communion dress

Dress Measuring Guide - Measure a Girl for a Communion dress - Guide on How to Measure a child for a First Communion dress -Matching Measurements to Size

If you are purchasing your Communion dress online, we recommend that you first choose the Communion dress, then measure your child and follow the guide on How to Measure a child for a First Communion Dress guidelines to help select the correct size before ordering.

All the designers provide a Dress Size Chart, so we recommend that you refer to each chart, these will give you a general idea - although we are always happy to re-measure the dress to your measurements. Be aware that some charts go by the child's measurement, others by the dress measurements, some are inches and some are Cm's. Many of the First Communion dresses are fairly fitted so it is important to get a dress that fits well.
Keep measuring tape close to the body, but not tight.

CHEST: Measure around the fullest part of the chest (1" below arm hole)

WAIST: Measure around the natural waistline level with the belly button or where you would bend

LENGTH: Measure from shoulder to hemline - or for long length measure to floor - for ballerina length measure to ankle

Then use these measurements to check which dress size you will need from the designers size charts given on line.

Matching Measurements to Size
Once you have taken your child's measurements, see the corresponding designer's size chart (see below) to determine the Communion dress size you should order. These size charts map the measurements to the designer sizes so you can determine the closest size to order.

Check each designers size charts for length to see which age/size the length is, then check the chest measurement, to dress length to see which dress size you will require. We recommend that you allow approx an inch or an inch and a half for comfort between your daughter's chest measurement and the dress.

If your measurements indicate one size for the "chest" and a different size for the "waist", or if you fall between two sizes, we suggest ordering according to the largest measurement. It is easier to take-in the size than to add fabric to a dress. Often you will need to plan (budget and time) for a dressmaker to tailor your dress for a perfect fit after you receive it. Alternatively check other designer size charts to see if they have dress sizes that matches your measurements .
